My partner Ivo’s back in London and he brought with him some sweet treats from Czech, and a strange Easter folk tradition which whips up more than just chocolate coated eggs!Believe it or not, Easter in the Czech Republic comes with a tradition of spanking carried out on Easter Monday. Before midday, Czech men meet in groups and visit girls and women to spank them with a special handmade whip made with a braided willow branches called pomlázka. I’m told the playful action is symbolic of chasing away winter, and as legend has it, women should be spanked with a pomlázka in order to keep their health, beauty and fertility during the whole next year!
But wait there’s more!
Spankers are then rewarded by the women with brightly painted eggs or, more often these days, shots of vodka or slivovitz, a strong Czech plum liquor.
The spanking tradition wasn’t on the cards this time, and we passed on the alcohol reward! However the bag cinnamon chocolate coated almonds hand-delivered directly from Czech made a tasty treat and great alternative to traditional Easter eggs – they are moreish!
I’ll be sharing more from my Easter Bank holiday with Ivo; indoor climbing, brunch and making plans for the near future…
